Common injuries caused by construction site accidents

If you’re employed as a construction worker, there’s always a chance you could be part of an accident. This is why you take extreme caution every day, all with the idea of avoiding a situation that could result in an injury.

There are many types of construction site accidents, ranging from a fall from a height to a trench collapse. Here is a brief list of the most common injuries in these accidents:

  • Broken bones or fractures
  • Lacerations and cuts
  • Amputation of toes, fingers and limbs
  • Eye injuries
  • Ear injuries, such as hearing loss
  • Paralysis, often related to a fall from a height
  • Soft tissue injuries, such as from improper lifting techniques or overuse
  • Traumatic brain injury, typically related to a fall or something dropped from above
  • Ankle, knee and shoulder sprains

While these are among the most common injuries, many others can occur. This is what makes it so difficult to remain safe, day in and day out.

What to do after a construction site injury

If you’re part of a construction site accident, don’t attempt to go about your day. Instead, do the following:

  • Call for medical help.
  • Report the incident to your employer.
  • Receive medical treatment.
  • Learn more about your long-term prognosis.
  • Share the necessary information with your employer.

If your medical team suggests time away from work, the last step is to file a claim for workers’ compensation benefits. There is no guarantee of an approval, but you want to work to seek compensation until you can return to work once again. In the event of a denial, you have the legal right to file an appeal.
